A Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) driver, Collins Nnodi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for hitting and killing a businesswoman in the Agric area of Ikorodu last week.
Nnodi had gone into hiding after ramming Mrs Grace Okeleke, the wife of Head of Public Relations, Globacom, Andrew Okeleke on Monday, May 11.
He was driving a BRT vehicle with number plate EPE 59 XR at the time of the incident, while the businesswoman was said to be crossing the road around 7:20pm after her driver dropped her off.
The suspect allegedly sped off after knocking down the victim, who died on the spot.
Cletus Okodolor, the Chief Security Officer, Primero Transport Services Limited, which operates the BRT buses, said the suspect was apprehended on Friday and handed over to the police.
He disclosed that Nnodi’s guarantor facilitated his arrest.
“Initially, the family of the victim thought we were hiding the busman, but we don’t do that and we disassociate ourselves from what the busman did. Why would he run? What we told them was that if an accident occurs, they should report at the nearest police station.
“We were able to apprehend the fleeing busman on Friday and we took him to the police station. We arrested him through his second guarantor, whom we told the implication of what he did. So, he cooperated and he even said the busman did not inform him about the incident,” Okodolor said.
Lagos State Police Command spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana confirmed the driver’s arrest, adding that the bus involved was also impounded.
