Police deny IGP paid N2bn for tenure extension

IGP Adamu

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says there is no truth behind a report that Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu paid N2 billion as bribe to secure tenure extension.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari extended the police boss’s tenure by three months recently.

A popular online news medium reported on Sunday that Adamu paid N2 billion to secure the extension.

In a statement on Monday signed by Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CP Frank Mba, the police authorities described the report as “untrue, unfounded, defamatory and libellous”.

“The Force wishes to state categorically that the extension of service of the IGP was strictly the prerogative of the President and was never paid for as maliciously reported in the publication,” the statement read in part.

Mba added that the insinuations by the online news medium that the IGP did not “celebrate” his extension smacked of ignorance and a pathetic misplacement of priority.

He said that the extension did not call for merry-making or celebration but a time for more work, rededication to duty and selfless service to the nation.

“The IGP, while assuring the nation of an unwavering commitment by the Force under his leadership, to improved service delivery, safety and security of the citizenry, enjoins members of the public to disregard and discountenance the publication,” the statement read.

“The IGP is undistracted and the Force remains motivated and committed to delivering on its mandate, especially the task of neutralising current and emerging internal security threats.

“Meanwhile, the IGP has directed his legal team to commence legal actions against the online publishers,” the statement also read.
