3 Min Read

The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested four suspects in connection with the crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos Island, which led to the death of its member.

The crisis which occurred on Jan. 23 at No. 1, John Street, Idumota, Lagos led to the death of one Ganiyu Ayinla, a member of the union.

Addressing newsmen in Ikeja on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the suspects came in a tinted glass Toyota Camry and opened fire on their target.

According to Imohimi, the suspects’ target was one Kunle Poly, a member of the union, who sustained injury but his Personal Assistant, identified as Ayinla was shot dead.

“On receiving the information, operatives of the command and the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) swung into action and four suspects were arrested.

“The said Toyota Camry car with registration number KTU713 EZ, used in the operation, and one pump action gun were recovered from them.

“So far, they have confessed to the crime and went further to mention one Ade Lawyer as a co-participant in the crime but he is presently at large.

“This type of killing has become the trend of events whenever the NURTW’s election is approaching, but this present police administration in Lagos State will certainly make it the last.’’

In another development, a 300 level Archaeology student of Caleb University, Imota, was also arrested for impersonating the Nigerian Air Force personnel.

The suspect, Hammed Hassan, was accused of smuggling substances suspected to be Indian hemp into the school campus.

He, however, told newsmen that he went to a police station wearing an air force uniform to bail his friend when he was arrested.

“When I got to the police station, some policemen asked me to identify myself and I told them that I am an officer in the Nigerian Army.

” I was subsequently arrested when they told me that the uniform I was wearing belonged to the Nigerian Air force and not the Nigerian Army I claimed.

“I have also been caught twice for impersonation an air force personnel at Sam Ethan Air Force Base, Ikeja, and at Ikorodu by an intelligence officer, but I was later released.” (NAN)
