Police arraign vendor for spending N.121m mistakenly credited to his account

Court Refuses Bail for Ex-Security Adviser over Alleged Rape

A 27-year-old book vendor, Mathias Adekpe, who police accused of criminally spending N121,000 which was mistakenly credited to his account,   on Tuesday appeared in a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court, Abuja.

The police charged Adekpe, who live opposite Catholic Church, Kurudu, Abuja, with two counts of theft and criminal misappropriation.

The prosecutor, Adeniyi Oyeyemi, told the court that one Lawrence Achang of Diamond Bank, Federal Secretariat branch, Abuja, on Dec. 7 reported the matter at the Central police station, Abuja.

According to Oyeyemi, the complainant alleged that one Favour Chukwumezie, a customer mistakenly paid the sum of N121,000 into the defendant’s savings account.

The prosecutor said that instead of the defendant to draw the attention of the bank to the alert he saw the transaction, he withdrew the money and converted it to his personal use.

Oyeyemi said that during police investigation, the defendant confessed to taking the money.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 309 of the Penal Code.

Adekpe however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Rapheal Egbe, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Jan. 24, 2019 for hearing. (NAN)
