Yusuf Kolo, a senior police officer who tortured a man who was falsely accused of armed robbery to death in 2014, has received two promotion since the incident occurred.
This shocking discovery was disclosed in a documentary made by BBC Africa Eye, titled ‘The Torture Virus’ which was released on Monday, February 11, 2020.
According to a documentary, Hassan Alfa was tortured along with his elder brother Auwalu, who reportedly survived the torture, on a false allegation of armed robbery.
The documentary also disclosed that the judge who ruled in the civil case brought against the police stated that Hassan’s death from the severe beating he got while in police detention, describing the torture as “unlawful, barbaric and illegal”.
Shockingly, the officer who was with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Kano at the time of the incident has since been promoted twice, first to the position of a Deputy Commander of the IGP Special Tactical Squad, Force Headquarters, and later to Commander of the squad, his current position.
The lawyer who represented Hassan and Anwalu, who was featured in the documentary, disclosed that through those years, no action has been taken against Kolo and others involved in the torture.

Bukarti said,
“The next thing we heard was that Yusuf Kolo, who was heading SARS the day the deceased was tortured and killed, had been promoted to become the head of SARS at the national headquarters in Abuja.”
