PlayStation 4 Debuts With 1 Million Consoles Sold in First Day

1 Min Read

Seven years after the launch of its last console in the U.S., the PlayStation 4 has hit stores.

One million units of the PS4 were sold during the first day it became available in North America, Sony announced on Sunday.

The PS3, by comparison, had received a more limited launch in the U.S. in 2006 and received initially unfavorable press as it went head-to-head with the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii during that holiday season.

“Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29,” said Sony Computer Entertainment’s president and group CEO Andrew House in a statement touting the PS4 sales figure. “We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.”

Sony says that 30 games will be available for the console, priced at $399 at launch, by the end of 2013.

The company has stated that it expects 5 million units of the PS4 to be sold in North America by March 2014, Bloomberg reported.

Microsoft’s new console the Xbox One, with a price tag of $499, hits stores on Nov. 22.
