Winner of Plateau Governor’s Golf Cup to go Home with N842,000

Mr Samuel Igyem, the overall winner of the 2020 Plateau Governor’s Golf Cup tournament, on Sunday in Jos went home with N842,000 prize money.

Emerging the tournament champion, Igyen of the Lamingo golf club, Jos, has now qualified to play in the national tournament of champions.

Speaking at the event, Gov. Simon Lalong of Plateau congratulated all winners at different categories.

Lalong urged those, who didn’t win, to put more efforts next year.

The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, promised to support golf and other sports in order to promote peaceful coexistence in the state.

“I want to assure you that as a government, we will continue to support this tournament and other sporting activities in the state.

“The commitment on which the tournament, started six years ago, will continue.

“We are committed to using sports to consolidate on the peace being currently enjoyed in the state,’’ he said.

The governor commended golfers who came from far and near to participate in the tournament.

Earlier, Mr Joseph Bukar, Captain of Lamingo Golf Club, venue of the tournament, said 100 professionals, 241 amateur and veteran golfers participated in the competition.

Bukar commended golfers for their good conduct throughout the period of the competition, urging them to sustain the behaviour.

He also thanked the Plateau Government and other cooperate organisations for sponsoring the tournament.

In his remark, Igyem thanked God for enabling him to emerge the overall winner of the competition.

He dedicated his victory to his mentor, Mr Latep Dabang, saying his mentorship brought him thus far in the game of golf.

“I am excited to have emerged the overall champion.

“It was not easy playing with more experienced players, I just had a better week.

“I will do everything possible to defend my title in next year’s tournament,’’ he said.
