Plateau gets ready for first LG polls in five years

2 Min Read

After about five years since the last Council elections were conducted, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) said Local Government Elections in the State will be held on 7th December, 2013, saying elections were not held earlier than now due to security challenges bedeviling the State.

This was disclosed by the Commission’s Chairman, Hon. Peter Dalyop, while briefing journalists at the Commission’s Headquarters in Jos on Monday.

According to him, “The Commission had worked out a time table which however could not be released due to the precarious security situation the State was going through. It is my pleasure to inform you that the current security advice is that the atmosphere in Plateau State is now conducive for the conduct of Local Government elections.

Adding that, “In view of this, PLASIEC hereby releases the time table for the conduct of the Local Government elections in Plateau State.

The activities on the time table commence with the issuance of notice of election today, Monday 2nd, September, 2013 and will terminate with the elections on Saturday 7th, December, 2013.

He went further to declare that public campaigns by political parties will commence as from 3rd September, 2013 to 6th December, 2013.

Dalyop commended the people of the State for their patience and understanding, urging stakeholders and the public to cooperate with
the Commission for the success of the polls.

It would be recalled that, the last elections conducted in the state on the 27th November, 2008 led to a serious violence as the outcome was greatly challenged by some people who claimed the exercise was marred by irregularity.
The violence claimed several lives and property worth millions of naira were also destroyed.
