An Indonesian woman identified as Nur Elita was marched to the the yard of Baiturrahumim Mosque in Banda Aceh to endure public caning after she was spotted with her male university mate.
Indonesia’s Sharia law prohibits a man and woman who is not married from standing in close proximity to each other.
The crowd cheered as she was brought to the stage and after five strokes of cane, she fainted, she had to be carried off the stage, into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
Her university mate was also canned, he was forced to stand during his own caning. Four other men were also canned for gambling which is prohibited by Sharia law.
The caning ceremony was carried out in from of the deputy mayor of Banda Aceh Zainal Arifin.
