PDP crisis: BoT calls on Ayu to promise to resignation after election

The People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has asked Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, to assure the members that he will resign after the 2023 general election.

The advice to Ayu is part of the resolutions reached by the PDP BoT on Friday in Abuja.

The BoT, led by Adolphus Wabara, had recently embarked on “reconciliation visits” to disgruntled members of the party, particularly those in the camp of Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike.

The Herald recalls that after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar won the party’s presidential ticket, Wike and his supporters demanded Ayu’s resignation.

The call for Ayu’s resignation is based on the fact that the party’s national chairman and presidential candidate cannot be from the same region.

However, some party members have rejected the call for Ayu to resign, claiming that the national chairman can only resign after the February presidential election if Abubakar wins.

Wabara stated in the communique released after the meeting on Friday that the “BoT called on all party leaders and persons close to them to desist forthwith from making further inflammatory remarks or press interviews.”

He stated that the BoT has directed the chairman of the PDP governors’ forum to call a meeting of the forum as soon as possible.

According to him, all party leaders have been asked to “match words with action and to unconditionally fulfill commitments made.”

He also said the BoT “urged the national chairman as an eminent leader, to give a firm assurance that he will resign his position after the 2023 election”.

“In the same vein, the BoT chairman has been authorised to offer apologies on behalf of all members who feel maligned or aggrieved by the public statements made by its members nationwide that have sharpened the current division in the party.

“The BoT also called on the presidential candidate to review its membership of the presidential campaign council, and other advisory appointments to make it all-inclusive,” the party’s BoT said via the communique
