2 Min Read

The 44-year-old Italian man that tested positive for coronavirus and was quarantined at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, on Thursday attempted to flee the facility on Friday but failed, reports say.

The index patient was said to have lamented the deplorable state of the isolation centre, complaining bitterly about excessive heat and mosquitoes at the facility.

According to Saturday Punch, a highly-placed worker at the Mainland Hospital, Yaba reported the incident on Friday.

The newspaper quoted the unnamed source as disclosing that the Lagos State Government has not “matched words with action” in its promise to curtail the spread of the virus.

He described the patient as “very upset” about the “very poor quality” of the centre, alleging that the patient attempted to leave the facility but was stopped from doing so.

“The patient wanted to run away yesterday (Friday). The Italian man, who seems to be an engineer, was very angry that the room where he was kept was very hot.

“There is nothing there (inside the isolation ward) aside from bed and hospital locker. He almost ran away and is still threatening to do that, the source said.

Coronavirus was first diagnosed in Wuhan, China in January 2020 but has since spread to over 46 countries.

Officially known as COVID-19, the virus has infected over 80,000 globally, with nearly 3,000 fatalities.
