Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun says the crisis in the party was caused by a few missteps it had when it took over power at the centre.
According to Premium Times Oyegun made the disclosure on Wednesday when he received the leadership of the National Assembly.
“Unfortunately, it is clear, it is a public knowledge now that our very first steps when we came into office created problems and the very nature itself of the amalgamating parties created its own issues,” Mr. Odigie-Oyegun said.
One of the issues that put varying blocs of the party at variance was the composition of the leadership of the National Assembly. This singular issue pitched various factions against one another as each side wanted one of its own at the helm of the affairs at the legislature.
The emergence of Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively did not go down well with the party leadership, which had Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as its candidates for the respective positions.
Oyegun added that the problems piled up to “affect the mode of operations and the level of interactions between the various arms of government and the party.
“It is my hope that we will at the end of it all be able to present to the Nigerian public, a government, a party and a National Assembly that are working all in the same direction.
In his reaction Senate President Bukola Saraki, who led the delegation, said a new dawn has emerged in the party.
“We need to work closely together and we are hopeful that the new chapter is being opened today,” Mr. Saraki said.
