Ivorian football legend, Didier Drogba has thrown a challenge at the Super Eagles in the wake of striker, Victor Osimhen’s crowning as the CAF African Footballer of the Year.
The Napoli striker fought off competition from Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah to clinch the award, which was last won by a Nigerian (Nwankwo Kanu) in 1999.
Osimhen’s success crowned a memorable night for Nigeria’s contingent to the award held in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday night, as the Super Falcons’ duo of Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie claimed the CAF Women’s Player of The Year and CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year awards respectively.
It was also the sixth title won by Oshoala, who became the first Super Falcons player to score at three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups earlier this year.
Drogba, who won the CAF African Footballer of the Year twice, congratulated the Nigerian players in a Facebook post on Monday night.
The Ivorian legend also jocularly drew Nigerians’ attention to the upcoming CAF African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled to be held in his native Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024.
The Super Eagles are drawn in Group A with hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau.
