The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday apologised over his recent comment that he would not support another Fulani president.
Ortom had made the controversial comment while berating the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar over his alleged support for the armed Fulani herdsmen attacking Benue residents.
The Benue governor spoke when he played host to other members of the G-5 governors, a group of five PDP governors at loggerheads with the party’s leadership, at a State Banquet in Makurdi on Monday.

“I will never support a Fulani man to become president. If there is another person who is ready to work with me and ensure the security of my people, I will work with him,” Ortom had said.
However, while speaking with journalists in Bauchi State on Wednesday, the Benue governor said that he did not mean the statement the way it was being portrayed.
“I want to say that the statement people are holding on was not what I meant when I was captured saying that.
“But all the same, I know that it would amount to (a) logical fallacy. I want to say to those who are so offended by my remarks, I am very sorry. I didn’t mean that,” Ortom said.
