Kasarachi Odurukwe, a 12-year-old orphan that allegedly hanged himself to death in Agboala Ishiala Umudi community in Nkwerre LGA of Imo State, frequently talked about reuniting with his parents.
The primary six pupil of Practicing School, Umudi was said to have become despondent after his parents’ demise.
Although he lived with an aunt alongside his two younger siblings, Odurukwe was said to have complained frequently about how unfair the world was to him and told his peers he would one day end his life.
A community source said the orphan eventually carried out the threat on Sunday by hanging himself with a rope on a bamboo tree near the community’s river.
On the fateful day, the source said, Odurukwe led his two siblings and two other children to fetch water from the stream servicing the community.
On getting there, he was said to have used a stick to measure the depth of the stream possibly with the hope of drowning himself.
However, he was unsatisfied with the shallow depth of the stream and instead searched for a rope to hang himself on a bamboo tree beside the river.
The Herald gathered that the orphan’s first two attempts failed as the bamboo trees did not support his weight.
Meanwhile, the four younger children with him were said to have pleaded with him to stop but he refused.
However, he reportedly succeeded in committing suicide on the third attempt as he got a bamboo tree that supported his weight.
The Imo State Police Command has yet to confirm the incident.
