Orji Kalu’s New Telegraph News gets exclusive deal with New York Times

3 Min Read

Nigerian publication New Telegraph newspapers has inked an exclusive deal with one of the most reputable newspapers in the world, The New York Times.

SUN reports:

The New York Times (NYT), one of the most reputable newspapers across the globe, has granted the New Telegraph an exclusive licence to print and distribute its international publication in Nigeria every week for the next three years, starting from Monday, October 6.

The deal, the first of its kind by NYT with any newspaper organisation in the whole of Africa, entails the New Telegraph carrying a 12-page insert of the International New York Times, produced by chief correspondents and editors of NYT, every Monday for the next three years.

The insert will be a co-branded weekly section in the New Telegraph, in the layout and typography of the New York Times domestic edition. It will be composed of news coverage, commentary, colour photos and graphics about the United States, world affairs, business, culture and social trends.

The New York Times is an American daily newspaper, founded and continuously published in New York City since September 18, 1851. It has won 112 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other news organisation.

Also as part of the deal, the New Telegraph will display a PDF version of each issue of the insert on the newspaper’s website, http://www.newtelegraphonline.com, for a period of no more than 14 days following the first publication.

Commenting on the development, the Publisher of New Telegraph, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, said: “Nigerians, much like those actors in the emerging world, live and engage within a 24-hour, seven days a week information cycle.

“However, and similar to many of said actors, we have so too often fallen victim in years past to such insight being filtered by the agendas of few; those who would seek to shape the perception of national and global events. Conversely, the New Telegraph has subscribed to offering factual, bipartisan and unadulterated political and economic insight in order to keep our audiences informed and engaged, a mantra no doubt shared with our new partners at the International New York Times.

“We look forward to the unique value that the team behind ‘The Gray Lady’ will bring to our organisation and to our readerships via their international offering each week.

“On behalf of the dedicated and effective team at the New Telegraph newspaper, we look forward to future endeavours and shared next steps with our colleagues at the International New York Times. Our readers, Nigeria’s true decision-makers, will reap the benefits of a broadsheet determined to bring the very best and brightest each week and every day.”
