“Order for Gold iPhones sums up the insensitivity of the Federal Government” – ASUU

2 Min Read

Media outlets yesterday reported the purchase of 53 gold iPhones from a British entrepreneur at the sum of over N600 million by the Federal Government.

Although the CEO of the company, Amjad Ali, came out to deny that the customer was the Nigerian government, it remains quite instructive that the devices are being designed with the Nigerian coat of arms on the back. Analysts take this to mean that the devices are either being contracted by a person for government officials or by government officials themselves.

ASUU, speaking in response to the gross waste of resources for trivial purposes, said the purchase showed insensitivity to the plight of the masses by the Federal Government.

The union, speaking through its Ibadan zonal coordinator, Dr. Nassir Adesola, called on the Government to fulfill its electoral promises to the people before engaging in such “extravagance.”

He said, “It sums up the insensitivity of the Federal Government. For the administration to think of doing this at a time the Minister of Finance is saying that the FG has not enough money to run the country is unfortunate. It seems that the government has gone to sleep and not in tune with the society, it is governing.

“The Federal Government should first cater for its citizens roaming the streets, and rehabilitate its collapsed industries before spending so much for phones. Any government that engages in such a frivolity and extravagance is not serious and its people should reject it.”
