Open letter to Governor Zulum: It’s time to call off motorcycle ban in Maiduguri metropolis – By Hamza Ali Usman

3 Min Read

I hope this letter finds you well. As a concerned resident of Maiduguri and an advocate for the revival of our city’s mobility and economic growth, I write to you today with a pressing plea – it’s time to reconsider and call off the ban on motorcycles in Maiduguri metropolis.

The decision to ban motorcycles, or “okadas,” in Maiduguri was undoubtedly made in the interest of security during a tumultuous time when insurgents misused these vehicles to sow fear and chaos. However, as the situation in our city has significantly improved owing to the commendable efforts of our security forces and the resilience of our people, it’s now crucial to reassess this prohibition and its impact on the lives of everyday citizens.

The ban on motorcycles, while initially meant to safeguard our community, has inadvertently led to severe disruptions in the lives and livelihoods of countless individuals. For years, motorcycles were not just a mode of transport but a means of survival for many families. They facilitated access to work, schools, markets, and healthcare services, enabling people to lead productive lives.

I understand the delicate balance between security concerns and the need for economic stability. However, as we witness the progressive stabilization of our region, the time has come to restore this essential mode of transportation. The return of motorcycles would not only aid in revitalizing the local economy but also alleviate the struggles faced by those who have been adversely affected by the ban.

Governor Zulum, I implore you to consider reinstating motorcycles in Maiduguri metropolis under a carefully structured framework that prioritizes safety and regulation. Implementing stringent guidelines, including licensing requirements, mandatory safety measures, and strict adherence to traffic regulations, can ensure the responsible operation of motorcycles within the city.

Moreover, I urge you to foster dialogue and collaboration with stakeholders, including motorcycle associations, community leaders, law enforcement agencies, and residents. This collaborative effort is crucial in developing comprehensive strategies that address concerns, promote safety, and foster a conducive environment for the return of motorcycles.

I acknowledge the challenges and complexities surrounding this issue, but I firmly believe that with prudent planning and collective efforts, we can navigate these challenges and unlock the immense potential that the reinstatement of motorcycles holds for our city.

In conclusion, I respectfully urge you, Governor Zulum, to revisit the ban on motorcycles in Maiduguri metropolis and consider the reinstatement of this vital mode of transportation. Let us work together to build a safer, more prosperous, and inclusive Maiduguri for all its residents.

*Hamza Ali Usman, from Mass Communication Department Borno State University, Maiduguri.
