Okonjo-Iweala reacts to “hiccups” in WTO DG bid

2 Min Read

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala says she is “keeping the positively going” in her bid to become Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

She stated this in a Thursday tweet, two days after scaling through the third and final round of the selection process.

However, she was not declared the winner as all the 164 member states of the organisation were expected to adopt the winner by consensus.

The United States had refused to back the former World Bank Managing Director, maintaining its support for South Korea’s Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee.

Reacting, Okonjo-Iweala wrote, “Happy for the success & continued progress of our @wto DG bid.

“Very humbled to be declared the candidate with the largest, broadest support among members & most likely to attract consensus.

“We move on to the next step on Nov 9, despite hiccups. We’re keeping the positivity going!” she wrote.

If elected, Okonjo-Iweala would become the first woman and first African to lead the WTO.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has promised to continue to engage relevant stakeholders to ensure her emergence.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ferdinand Nwonye disclosed this in a Thursday statement.
