Ohanaeze to IGP: We won’t allow herdsmen kill, rape Igbo people again

Former President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has warned against the continued killing and maiming of Igbo people in their own land by Fulani herdsmen.

The Igbo apex socio-cultural group stated this in an open letter written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu.

According to the letter signed by Ohanaeze President-General, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, the group said Ndigbo’s hospitality and recourse to rule of law in the face of provocation should not be mistaken for weakness.

Nwodo noted that Igbo people were capable and ready to defend themselves against external aggression.

“We are law-abiding, hospitable and always ready to coexist with others as friends and brothers but not as foes and at a supreme price. Enough is enough,” he said.

He recalled how two Fulani boys were seen in a community in Anambra openly brandishing AK-47 rifles, noting that when the state Commissioner of Police was informed, he declined to order their arrest because of their tribe.

“Is the bearing of unlicensed firearms no longer illegal and therefore punishable in breach in the laws of this country?” Nwodo asked the IGP.

“The behaviour of the police probably explains why it is only police commissioners from a particular part of the country that are posted to Igbo land.

“This also tends to lay credence to the fears being harboured by our people that even the military laying siege to Igbo land are here to protect the interest of an ethnic group.

“Not only have Ndigbo been marginalised in this country, they are even being pushed to the brink. It is always said that no country survives a second civil war,” he added
