Officer Who Shot and Killed Jordan Edwards Will Be Charged With Murder

2 Min Read

The police officer who killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, Roy Oliver, will be charged with murder, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The incident occurred on the night of last week Saturday. Following reports of gunshots at a house party, Oliver shot at a group of teens in a vehicle. He claimed they were moving toward officers “in an aggressive manner.” Edwards, a Mesquite High School freshman who was inside of the car, was shot and killed.

The police department later changed its story and stated the teenagers in the car were driving away from the trouble when they were shot at.

Oliver was fired earlier this week over the incident. However, he has yet to be arrested.

The department said Oliver’s actions “did not meet our core values,” and the shooting was investigated by the Balch Springs Police Department, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office.

“We are declaring war on bad policing. This has happened far too often,” said the attorney for Edwards’ parents, Lee Merritt. “We are tired of making the same rhetorical demands, of having the same hashtags; our community is fed up with the same tired excuses, once again offered by Balch Springs Police Department yesterday, that this was somehow the fault of the victims—teenage kids with no criminal records, with no motive to attempt to hurt anyone, with no evidence that they ever attempted to hurt anyone.”

Oliver’s bond will be set at $300,000.
