Octogenarian in court for beating PHCN worker over power disconnection

An octogenarian, Yusuf Akanji, on Wednesday appeared in an  Ogudu Magistrates’ Court,  in Lagos for allegedly ordering some boys to beat up a Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) worker who  disconnected power supply to their area.

The police charged Akanji, who resides at Olanipekun Street, Ketu Lagos, with conspiracy, unlawful obstruction and assault.

The prosecutor, Insp Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 27.

Ihiehie alleged the accused ordered some boys to beat up a PHCN worker for disconnecting power supply to their area.

He said that the defendant and two others, at large conspired and assaulted Mr Morenikeji Amosun while performing his duty.

He told the court that the defendant ordered some boys to beat up the complainant because he disconnected their power supply for failing to pay their bills.

The prosecutor alleged that the accused tore the complainant’s clothes, injured him in the right eye and dispossessed him of his cell phone.

Ihiehue said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 117(2), 172 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

If convicted, he is liable  to three years in prison or a fine of N200, 000 for any convicted offender.

After the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate E. Kubeinje,  admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

Kubeinje adjourned the case until April 8 for mention. (NAN)
