President Muhammadu Buhari has taken a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led governments from 1999 to 2015, saying that they nearly destroyed Nigeria.
The president stated this in item no. 57 of his 60th Independence Anniversary broadcast on Thursday morning.

According to the president, the Nigerian economy like every other economy in the world is in crisis.
He noted that while his government has been trying to counter the effect of the global economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and disproportionate spending on security with scarce resources, opposition elements have been criticising it relentlessly.
He said that those in previous governments from 1999 – 2015 (under Olusegun Obasanjo – 1999 to 2007; Umaru Yar’Adua – 2007 to 2009; and Goodluck Jonathan – 2010 to 2015) do not have the moral rectitude to criticise his administration.
“No government in the past did what we are doing with such scarce resources.
“We have managed to keep things going in spite of the disproportionate spending on security.
“Those in the previous Governments from 1999 – 2015 who presided over the near destruction of the country have now the impudence to attempt to criticize our efforts,” Buhari stated.
