The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Saturday commended the Federal Government for the appointments of tested media professionals and technocrats to head its media establishments and parastatals agencies.
This is contained in a statement signed by NUJ National Secretary, Mr Shuaibu Liman, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
“We commend President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing these highly proficient persons, Bayo Onanuga, MD NAN; Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, DG NBC; Yakubu Mohammed, DG NTA; Mansur Liman, DG FRCN; Osita Okechukwu, DG VON, and Garba Abari, DG NOA.
“This development clearly shows that government is mindful of the complex nature of the media industry and desires to make a meaningful change,“ the union said.
NUJ expressed hope that the appointed distinguished media experts were going to inject the desired change into the practice of journalism.
“It is our hope that these highly cerebral leaders of the industry will bring the necessary shift from the malaise that overwhelmed some of these media organisations prior to the 2015 national elections.
“Indeed the task ahead for these parastatals is herculean, but with the calibre of professionals appointed, we shall hopefully experience the much desired turn around within a limited time,“ the NUJ said.
The union congratulated the newly appointed media icons and advised them to “justify their appointments by excelling in their respective assignments.“
