Speaking during the donation on Tuesday, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Samuel Fadeyi, said the donation was part of activities marking the Civil Defence World Day celebration.

Fadeyi, who recently assumed duty in the state, said the donation was to let the children feel a sense of belonging in the Nigerian society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items donated included; bags of rice, dozens of tissue papers, gallons of vegetable oil, cartons of noodles and juice and cartons of milk, among others.

“We are here to donate a token and also make you feel a sense of belonging.

“We are out to defend the defenceless and this is one of the cases, let everyone feel a sense of love.

“As long as you are not into criminality, and you are going about your normal businesses, we are there for you,” Fadeyi said.

The state commandant reiterated that the primary responsibility of the NSCDC was for defense of the defenseless, which the children were part of.

In her response, the State Coordinator of the orphanage, Mrs Ime Inyang-eyen, while receiving the Items, expressed appreciation to the NSCDC command for the kind gesture shown to the children.

“It is very encouraging to know that men in uniform are also human beings, and have a heart to show love and care to vulnerable ones. So, for me, I am very excited to witness this.

“I appreciate the new commandant that has come to chart a new course, because this is different from what we used to think about men in uniform,” she said.

In her remarks, the supervisor of the home, Mrs Imoh Brown, thanked NSCDC for the gesture, adding that it would encourage the home in doing more for the children.

“This gesture is a very important gesture for the children. I am so impressed because majority of them are in higher institutions.

” They are happy with what the Home is doing for them, they are grateful,” Brown said.

Earlier, the command had taken to major streets in Uyo metropolis to sensitise the public on the dangers of pipeline vandalism and other heinous crimes.

They displayed different placards with various inscriptions such as “Shun illegal re-connection”, “Shun oil theft”, “Shun petrol adulteration “, “Shun kerosene adulteration “, “Stop pipeline vandalism”.

Other inscriptions included; “Report PHEDC vandal to NSCDC”, “Patronise registered private guard companies”, “Do not build on high tension lines and waterways, it causes fire and flood disaster”, “Shun illegal dredging”, among others.
