If the history of Nigeria is anything to go by, we all know that we have a problem when it comes to unity and seeing “ourseves” first as Nigerians before we see ourselves as members of a particular tribe, so it was expected that people of the northern Nigerian would not take it lightly the stone of governors representing the the region while on a solidarity visit to Governor Amaechi, this is why the Northern Youth Congress, a socio-political organisation comprising youths in the North, on Monday threatened to embark on street protests if the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, failed to sack the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Joseph Mbu.
The congress also supported the resolution of the Northern Elders Forum that the region must produce Nigeria’s President by 2015, and that Plateau State Governor, Mr. Jonah Jang, must stop parading himself as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum chairman.
It further demanded an apology from the Nigerian Police and the people of Rivers State for stoning four northern governors, who paid a solidarity visit to the state recently. The governors were Sule Lamido of Jigawa; Babangida Aliyu of Niger; Murtala Nyako of Adamawa; and Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano.
The Secretary-General, NYC, Mr. Mamah Danesi, said northern youths were not happy with what happened in Rivers State when the governors visited, adding that the visitors were “role models to youths in the North.” Danesi spoke during a press briefing in Abuja.
He said, “If the people of South-South are not respecting their elders, we do. We demand an apology from them and from the police for such an embarrassment. If they don’t apologise, we will write formally to the IG.
“They might even see us on the streets and we are also considering going to a competent court of law to seek justice. We also call on the IG to sack the Rivers police commissioner and subject him to thorough investigation in the event that he remains adamant and refuses to resign.”
Earlier in his address, the National Coordinator, NYC, Mr. Abdulmumini Tijani, said Governor Rotimi Amaechi won the NGF election against Jang.
Also, the O’dua Youth Organisation expressed concern over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State with a call on the IG to arrest and prosecute the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, following her confession which linked her quarrel with Amaechi to the demolition of parts of Okrika about four years ago.
The group also warned against pushing the country into a political crisis following the recent pelting of four northern governors in the state.
The group, in a statement issued on Monday by its National leader, Biodun Oduwole, and Secretary, Diya Ashaolu, at the end of its emergency meeting in Abuja, also condemned the attempt by five members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach the Speaker, which resulted in a fight
