Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has expressed her disapproval of the current administration’s decision to reinstate the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” The move, which was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, has been met with criticism from Henshaw, who questioned the timing of the change.
In a series of posts on her social media handle, Henshaw lamented the country’s current state, citing “excoriating hardship and lack of good governance on every level.” She sarcastically wrote, “In the midst of excoriating hardship & lack of good governance on every level, but not to worry, going back to a colonial anthem will be a soothing balm and inject patriotism back into our veins, a much-needed drug.”
Henshaw also referenced the current national anthem, saying, “The labour of our heroes past… o ti lo [is gone].” Her comments have sparked a lively debate on social media, with many Nigerians sharing their thoughts on the decision to reinstate the old anthem.
The National Anthem Bill 2024, signed into law by President Tinubu, has been met with mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some welcoming the move and others, like Henshaw, expressing concerns about the timing and relevance of the change.
