No Group Can Impose Sharia Through Backdoor – Gov Abiodun Warns

2 Min Read

The Ogun State Government has issued a strong warning against any attempt to establish a Sharia Court in the state without legal authorization.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a statement personally signed on Tuesday, made it clear that no individual or group has the legal authority to set up such a court, emphasizing that only courts established under the Nigerian Constitution can operate in the state.

The statement was issued in response to a circulated notice announcing the launch of a Sharia Court in Ogun State. The governor reiterated that Ogun only recognizes courts backed by law, including Magistrates’ Courts, High Courts, Customary Courts, Customary Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, National Industrial Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

“No Sharia Court is authorized to operate within Ogun State. The courts legally empowered to adjudicate disputes are those established by the Nigerian Constitution or state laws,” the statement read.

Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to religious freedom but warned against the unauthorized formation of judicial bodies.

“The Ogun State Government upholds and protects the rights of individuals to practice their religion freely. However, this does not extend to forming unauthorized institutions that pose as courts,” he stated.

He further directed all persons involved in the creation of the unauthorized court to cease operations immediately and disband the entity. The government also urged residents to disregard any summons or documents issued by the illegal court and to report such activities to the authorities.

“The Ogun State Government will uphold the rule of law, ensure respect for the judicial framework, and prevent any breakdown of law and order,” the statement concluded.
