NMA Issues Apology for Electoral Violence by Doctors in Enugu

3 Min Read

The national body of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued an apology regarding what it called, the ‘shameful behaviour’ of its members in Enugu, following the bloody electoral violence that took place during the week.

The association also announced that it was setting up a three man committee to investigate the aborted elections and the violence that happened.

It described the behaviour of the doctors at the Enugu State branch and apologized to Nigerians who expressed disappointment at the uncultured behaviour of the doctors.

According to the NMA President, Prof. Innocent Ujah who announced the setting up of the committee, the aborted election was a show of shame sequel to the National Officers Committee meeting.

He admonished other branches of the NMA across the country yet to conduct their elections not to resort to what happened at the Enugu chapter of the association.

The committee which has two weeks to submit its report is expected to investigate the immediate and report causes of the violence that overtook the 2020, Enugu state NMA election. The investigative committee is chaired by a former president of the association, Prof. Mike Ogirima and has Agam Ayuk and Chris Yilgwan, immediate former State NMA chairmen for Cross River and Plateau state as members.

According to the NMA President in his apology; “Electoral violence in any form does not represent what the Nigerian Doctor stands for and it is, therefore, at variance with our noble conducts and ideals.

“As members of the noble profession, the leadership of the association cannot afford to stand by and watch such ugly behaviour, unbecoming of disgruntled members of our association. Using the relevant provisions of the association’s constitution, we shall ensure that discipline is restored not only in Enugu State NMA but also in all the branches of our association, so that our members will continue to exhibit the highest level of decorum expected of the medical practitioners in all our affairs, including, elections.

“What happened in Enugu during the NMA election, I must say that even though, an isolated case, is totally unacceptable. However, the report coming to me from over 20 States where elections have been conducted so far, indicate that they have been extremely peaceful. That is what is expected of the Medical Doctor and I commend them.”
