In line with a decision taken at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting last Wednesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has picketed the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) over unfriendly policies towards its staff.
The Herald had reported that in the communique released after the NEC meeting in Abuja, the labour union frowned at the increasing attack against workers and trade union rights by employers of labour in both the public and private sector.
“NEC berated the management of Corporate Affairs Commission for attempts to kill unionism in the establishment especially through punitive transfer of trade union executives, withholding of workers’ salaries and refusal to remit statutory deductions,” the communique read in part.
The union’s excos therefore committed to picketing the government establishment this week.
Leading NLC executives and hundreds of workers to picket the CAC headquarters in Abuja, National President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba stated that the union’s action was to cause a change in unfriendly policies towards workers of the commission.

The protest which began as early as 8:00 am witnessed a blockade of the commission’s entry points to prevent workers from gaining access to the building.
Wabba, who addressed the crowd as well as the media, faulted CAC Registrar-General, Garba Abubakar’s alleged wastage of the commission’s resources and stalled staff promotion.
The NLC President queried the rationale behind fumigating the building for a whooping N35 million and paint job for the Zone 5 annexe which cost N25 million.
He further alleged that the Registrar-General transferred married women staff out of the commission, describing the alleged practice as discriminatory.
