Nigerians have flayed the Cross River State House of Assembly for approving the Governor, Ben Ayade’s request to appoint 70 more Special Advisers.
The governor appointed 70 aides in December 2019, including ex-BBNaija star Gedoni.
But with Wednesday’s approval for 70 more, the number of political aides would increase to 140.
The Secretary to the State Government, Tina Agbor had written the Assembly on February 20 to seek approval for the fresh appointments.
Clerk of the House, Bassey Ekpenyong read the correspondence on the floor of the assembly on Wednesday.
The House in a motion filed by its Leader, Peter Odey, and seconded by the Deputy Leader, Fred Osim, unanimously resolved and granted consequential approval to the request.
Odey explained that the approval was based on the Assembly’s earlier request to Ayade through writing, on the need to cover other constituencies not yet considered in the appointments.
But many Nigerians took to social media to criticise the fresh appointments, saying it would bloat the cost of governance and reduce expenditure on capital projects.
