Nigerians have taken to social media to hail the two-year prison term passed on Prof Richard Akindele, who was accused of sexually harassing one of his students, Monica Osagie.
Akindele, a former lecturer with the Obafemi Awolowo University, was sentenced after changing his “not guilty” plea to “guilty” following a plea bargain.
Justice Maureen Onyekenu of the Federal High Court, Osun that delivered the judgement said the jail term passed on Akindele would help deter other lecturers from engaging in similar actions.
“The menace is getting to secondary and primary schools . I am a pastor and a counsellor . I know mental torture many of our female students have been subjected to by the likes of the respondent .
“The adverse effect of such action is huge . Many of his likes have been awarding marks to those students that are ready to warm their beds , thereby releasing half- baked graduates into the society,” the judge said.

Some Nigerians that took to social media hailed the judgement.
Read reactions monitored on Twitter:
Someone I once respected attacked me while she was defending the sex-for-marks OAU Professor. I went back to our thread to update it with his guilty plea. She had deleted her tweets. No apologies. Nothing. Nothing worse than seeing a woman defend such a monster!

Professor Richard Akindele sacked
from OAU has finally been sentenced to two years in prison for demanding sex for good grades.
This is a huge milestone for all women in universities against lectures who are sex predators.
His village people finally finished him completely.

This sex for marks scandal just reminds me of my second year in Med school in Nigeria. A certain lecturer wasn't going to let me pass my second year in peace 😭. Worse part is that he was a former biology teacher in sec school and even taught my class interscience for one term

He was one of the numerous reasons I had to leave Nigeria. Sometimes i wonder if my parents couldn't afford to send me to Europe how I would have survived. I hope more evil lecturers like this man get to pay the price for their stupidity.
