Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the decision by the government of Benin Republic to extend the detention of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho by six months.

According to reports, counsel to Igboho, Chief Yomi Aliyyu disclosed the extension on Sunday.

He stated that the extension was given despite there being no criminal charge by the Beninoise authorities nor extradition request from the Nigerian Government.

Recall that another of Igboho’s lawyers, Pelumi Olajengbesi said on Friday that Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, would soon regain his freedom.

“Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of the Republic de Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria,” The Punch quoted Aliyyu to have said.

The lawyer added that he would approach the court of the Economic Community of West African States to challenge the extension.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the news.

Senator for Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Shehu Sani condemned the continued incarceration of the Yoruba Nations activist.

“I don’t support Igboho’s separatist ideas and activities in anyway, but the reported extension of his detention by six months is inhuman and condemnable,” Sani wrote on Twitter on Monday morning.

Olisa Lota wrote, “Is Igboho’s agitation for a seperate Yoruba Nation a crime? We all know Igboho has acted within his rights supported wholly by the UN charter on self determination. One day, this hopeless failed state will be separated into many Nations with or without your support…”

Musa Ahmed wrote, “Sunday Igboho to remain in Cotonou prison for another SIX months.

“All those who pushed him have since moved on.”

Samuel Ifeanyi wrote, “All I can say is that the Nigerian government is the one manipulating the Benin government to detain Igboho perpetually.”
