President Buhari Finally Breaks Silence on Army/Shi’ite Clash

2 Min Read

Speaking during his inaugural Presidential Media Chat, President Muhammad Buhari has said a few words on the Shiíte massacre which took place in Zaria.

The President said most of the information he was receiving aobut the sect was from the pages of newspapers. He added that he spoke with Nasir elRufai, Governor of Kaduna over the issue as well.

“I was in touch with the Kaduna Governor. Interestingly, the President of Iran spoke to me about it. But I told him that as a government we have a system of investigation. The military also has a system. And I as the head of Federal Government, have to wait for official report before I can come out and make a statement. So I am allowing them to establish their reports. It also doesn’t mean the Police and Secret Service are not carrying out their own separate investigations.

“A judicial enquiry system may be the most acceptable system for our society to look into this matter.

Responding to a question posed on how serious President Buhari thought the incident was for the peace of the Nation, Buhari said, “I do not want to speak about it now but how can a group create such a status for it within a state. Teenagers pointing their fingers at generals.

The President said the killings were not justified, however he said the community in Zaria were also undergoing hardships for close to a decade due to the activities of the Shiíte sect in blocking federal highways and disturbing public peace.
