A Nigerian man Kenneth Uwegha (41) was on the 30th of May arrested in India over accusations of raping a 31 year old local woman.
Uwegha was arrested at the Panvel railway station near Mumbai and on Tuesday was remanded to police custody for three days by a trial court. His
He had an accomplice, who is still at large and is currently being hunted by the police.
Unfortunately according to the Superintendent of Police north Umesh Gaonkar, Uwegha already has priors having been arrested in 2012 for rioting and overstaying in India. Gaonkar also disclosed that Uwegha was caught while trying to flee Goa by train.
“Kenneth was arrested for rioting and blocking the National Highway in Goa in 2013. Our records also showed that he was booked at the Calangute police station in 2012 for illegally overstaying beyond his stipulated visa duration”
The alleged victim claimed that she was traveling to Parra on her bike when she was accosted by two Nigerians. One of them sat on her bike and at knife point forced her to ride to his room where they proceeded to rape her.
The incident caused a ruckus in the state, with Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar accusing Nigerians of trying to use the Indian legal system to their advantage and committing crimes on purpose so as to elongate their stay in the country.
