Nigeria will cease to exist if Ortom is assassinated – Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has warned that Nigeria would cease to exist should the assassination plot against his Benue state counterpart, Samuel Ortom, succeed.

He also said that the Federal Government would be held responsible.

Wike stated this in a statement signed by his Special Assistant (Medi), Kelvin Ebiri, while reacting to Saturday’s attack on Ortom by herdsmen.

Recall that the Benue governor disclosed that militia herdsmen opened fire on him as he was inspecting his farm near Tyo-mu, along Makurdi-Gboko Highway.

Fifteen gunmen were said to have trailed the governor to the river bank before launching the attack on him.

Ortom added that only the timely response of his security detail saved him from being killed.

Reacting to the revelation, Wike stressed that if the Benue State governor is killed, the country could be plunged into another civil war.

“If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria,” the Rivers governor warned.

Wike alleged that the former General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftains “had concluded plan to assassinate him during the 2019 general election”.

He described as “disturbing the growing trend where the life of incumbent governors are brazenly threatened”.
