Nigeria Is no Longer Immune to Earthquakes – Senate

2 Min Read
The Senate Chamber - Ministerial Screening Day 2

In the wake of the tremors that occurred in Kwoi, Kaduna state, the Nigerian senate is warning that Nigeria may no longer be immune to this natural disaster and that we have to be prepared to deal with it.

The senate discussed this while adopting a motion called ‘Earth Tremor and the Preparedness of Nigeria to Deal with its Intending Consequences,’

According to the Punch, this was sponsored by Senator Danjuma La’ah from Kaduna and the Senate discussed ways in which Nigeria could prepare for a potential disaster.

The legislature also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to help out by sensitizing people to the potential danger and educate them on what to do when the situation arises.

They also completed the Committee on Environment and Solid Minerals to investigate the communities affected and report their findings.

Senator La’ah said that after the recent tremors in Kaduna and Bayelsa states, researchers are warning that Nigeria is no longer safe from natural disasters.

La’ah explained the concept of earthquakes and why Nigeria could be in danger; “Earthquakes occur at places called faults where jagged edges of two tectonic plates grind against each other and as the tectonic plates move in slow motion, sometimes two grinding plates suddenly jolt into a new position and the energy released by this movement creates an earthquake.

“Areas prone to earthquake in Nigeria include the fault systems (zones), including the NNE-SSW trending fault systems cutting across Ifewara, Zungeru, Anka and Kalangai linking up to the Atlantic Ocean fracture system. It is a zone of concern and the areas at the proximity of these fault systems are at risk of earthquake/tremor.”
