The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has announced that 23 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Nigeria, spiking the total number to 174 on Wednesday, April 1.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control disclosed this on Wednesday through its official Twitter handle.

NCDC tweeted,

NCDC earlier said that using face masks as preventive measure against coronavirus spread in Nigeria may become mandatory.

This Day reports that the director-general, Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed that the federal government is considering the use of face mask to fight against the spread of the global pandemic in the country.

Ihekweazu also noted that although the use of face masks for persons other than health workers has been not approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the agency is nevertheless considering the usage as the incessant increase of the virus may necessitate its usage, however subject to certain factors.

Ihekweazu said:

“This is a strategy we need to think about before we implement it. Before we implement a national strategy around mask wearing, we have to be sure we can provide it or at least enable access to it.”
