The Niger Government has distributed relief materials worth N65 million to 78 communities, whose farm lands were destroyed as a result of flood that ravaged Mokwa and Edati local government areas of the state in 2016.
Alhaji Ibrahim Inga, Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) disclosed this in Mokwa on Sunday.
He said that the relief materials were to assist victims to resettle so as to earn a decent living.
He explained that government has provided rice, maize, vegetable oil, maggi and wrappers, roofing materials to assist the victims.
The director-general urged the benefiting communities to complement government’s gesture by promoting peace and unity in their localities.
Inga gave assurance that government would continue to support victims of various disasters to cushion the effect.
He noted that the cause of the flood was as a result of the rains and water released from river Kaduna and river Niger.
According to him, more than 500 hectres of rice farm and houses were washed away by flood.
The District Head of Wuya Kede, Alhaji Ibrahim Yawa, commended the state government’s intervention in reducing the suffering of the victims.
A beneficiary, Alhaji Mohammed Alhassan, said that “I am very happy that today, government has fulfilled its promise by giving us these relief materials.
Another beneficiary, Adamu Mohammed, also commended the government and called for Continuous support of the less privileged. (NAN).
