Niger Assembly not rubber stamp – Deputy Speaker

2 Min Read

The Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House Assembly, Alhaji Husseini Ibrahim, on Friday said the 8th Assembly in the state is not a rubber stamp of the executive.

Ibrahim made the assertion during a press briefing to mark the second anniversary of the 8th Assembly in the state.

“If you study the rudiments and principle of the 8th assembly, you will see that it is different from what used to be obtainable.

“Perhaps those before us were rubber stamp, but we the current members are not rubber stamp,” he said.

Ibrahim said the absence of legislature-executive friction in the state did not translate to being a rubber stamp.

“The development of the state comes first in everything we do, so we try to avoid things that will lead to friction with the executive because if there is friction, the state suffers.

“Also, don’t forget that democracy is a game of negotiation and lobbying,” he said.

The deputy speaker said that the House would continue to make laws to facilitate good governance and enhance peace in the society.

He reiterated the commitment of the leadership of the House toward improving the welfare of its staff.

In his remarks, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr Shuaibu Iya, said the assembly had considered 31 bills since coming on board in 2015.

Iya said that of the 31 bills, 12 had been passed into law; 10 of which had received the governor’s assent.

He said that 58 motions were raised on the floor of the House within the period under review, with 52 resolutions passed. (NAN)
