Barcelona and Brazil superstar Neymar has come down with the mumps, and will miss both the European Super Cup and the Spanish Super Copa.
Barcelona confirmed the news on Sunday morning, saying that the striker will be out for two weeks.
The European champions reported that Neymar was vaccinated against the disease – technically called parotitis – as a child, but has apparently contracted it regardless.
It means that the 23-year-old will play no part in Tuesday’s European Super Cup match against Sevilla in Tblisi.
And Neymar is also ruled out of the two-legged Spanish Supercopa against Athletic Bilbao, which takes place on 14th and 17th August.
The mumps vaccine is not 100 per cent effective, but reduces a person’s chances of contracting the disease by nine times.
