The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) says that it will host the second edition of the National Youth Games scheduled for Sept. 22. to Sept. 30.
This is contained in the university’s Bulletin issued on Monday in Ilorin.
According to the publication, athletes below 17 years from across the country will compete for honours in 11 events.
It named the events as, Athletics, Badminton, Chess, Cricket, Scrabble and Table Tennis.
Others are, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Para-athletics and Para-table tennis.
“Skating, Rowing and Yachting are the games for demonstrations at the event also,” it said.
The bulletin quoted the university`s Director of Sports, Prof. Olawole Obiyemi, as saying that officials of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sport Development visited the University on Sept 15, ahead of the games.
Obiyemi disclosed that the team led by Mrs Tayo Oreweme, the Deputy Director, Grassroots Development, expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness of the University.
According to the Bulletin “more than 2,000 athletes will participate in the week-long games that is expected to end on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016”,
It also quoted UniIlorin`s Vice-Chancellor, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali as pledging to support the games ahead the varsity staff games in Kaduna.
It said Ambali restated his commitment to continue to improve on the sporting facilities in the University.
It also stated that Ambali commended the university’s staff for demonstrating that they were efficient in sports activities.(NAN)
