The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris remains persona non grata to the National Assembly after holding a joint session to revisit their grouse against the top police man.
Recall that the IGP had on numerous occasions refused to appear before the Senate, a move which the National Assembly found to be disrespectful
The lawmakers had had an emergency joint session where they came to this resolution.
Senate President Bukola Saraki, was the man tasked with reading the resolution.
He said: “We also hereby reaffirm our earlier resolution on the vote of no confidence on the Inspector General of Police, who does nothing but preside over innocent Nigerians with an outright disregard for the constitutional authority of both the executive and the legislature,”
President Buhari also came into the firing line after the National Assembly resolved also to hold the President accountable for the actions of his appointees and sanction erring appointees.
“The President must be held accountable for the actions of his appointees and must be ready to sanction those that carry out any act which will ridicule or endanger our country and democracy.” Saraki read.
The Senate upheld the decision it earlier reached in May 2018 when they declared the IGP as an ‘enemy of democracy’ and a person unfit to hold public office.
The IGP had initially been summoned to answer for the spate of killings in the country and also answer for the treatment of Senator Dino Melaye while in custody.
The lawmakers also ordered the country’s security agencies to protect Nigerians and curtail incessant killings by gunmen.
“The Security Agencies must be given marching orders to curtail the sustained killings of Nigerians across the country and protect life and properties of Nigerians as this is the primary duty of any responsible Government.” read the Senate President
