Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, Nasarawa State, says it plans to introduce courses on railway transport technology.
Dr Shettima Abdulkadir-Saidu, Rector of the polytechnic, disclosed this to newsmen on Friday in Akwanga at a four-day retreat for the management of the institution.
Abdulkadir-Saidu said that the introduction of courses in railway technology was in line with the Federal Governments drive to revive the ‘near comatose’ railway sector.
He said the manpower needed for the rail sector would be greatly enhanced through the introduction of the courses in the school.
According to him, revitalising the railways would impact on the nation’s economy as it would reduce the cost of transporting large quality goods and prolong the lifespan of the country’s roads.
Abdulkadir-Saidu said other courses to be introduced included Agricultural Technology, Mechatronics as well as Higher National Diploma programmes for departments currently not running such in the school.
He said although the introduction of the course was capital intensive, requiring huge sums of money, the polytechnic was optimistic that the resources would be sourced from the Federal Government, private sector and donor agencies within five years target.
The rector also said the institution had adopted Information Communication Technology (ICT) to boost the teaching and learning processes in line with modern trends around the world.
He explained that the ICT mode of learning would be integrated into the conventional learning system in order to aid research and equip the library with materials that were not within reach. (NAN)
