Nasarawa State Government says it has approved N200 million for the payment of gratuity to over 2,000 local government pensioners.
The Director-General of the State’s Pension Bureau, Mr Sani Oseze, told newsmen on Monday in Lafia that the amount was for council workers who retired before April 2011.
He explained that those eligible for the payment were retirees who did not enjoy the minimum wage as implemented by the Gov. Umaru Al-Makura administration.
“There are retirees, who have not been paid their gratuities for over 25 years and were going through harrowing experiences to survive with their families.
“So, what Gov. Al-Makura wants to do is to clear all the backlog of gratuity before the inception of his administration in 2011 to ameliorate the plight of the pensioners,” Oseze said.
He said the bureau had compiled names of the beneficiaries and that modalities were being put in place to start the payment soon. (NAN)
