The upper chamber of the National Assembly, the Senate, conveyed a plenary session on Tuesday in which 83 senators passed a vote of confidence on the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki.
The senators, many of whom are from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, voted for the continuity of Saraki’s leadership despite his running battle with the Code of Conduct Bureau which dragged him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Saraki, a member of the All Progressives Congress, was charged on an 18-count charge bordering on false declaration of assets during his tenure as governor of Kwara state from 2003 to 2011. He denied all charges and declared them as politically-motivated.
The motion initially contained the names of 84 senators but the senator representing Osun East, Babajide Omoworare, asked that his name (listed as number 11) be stricken out of the list, stating that he was not consulted on the matter before his name was included.
