The German- Iranian shooter who opened fire at a mall on Friday in Munich, has been identified as 18-year-old Ali David Sonboly. Ali Sonboly shot dead nine people and injured at least 21 others. He was later found dead after fleeing the scene.
Earlier, it was speculated whether or not Sonboly was linked to ISIS but German police have now confirmed that Sonboly had no Islamist or any other terrorist group ties. Following a police search of the shooter’s room, a book about teenage shootings was discovered; but no documents linking him to any terrorist group. It was however deduced that the late Sonboly made a thorough study of past mass killings and decided to stage one of his own. It was also discovered that Sonboly had no criminal record but spent time in psychiatric care; implying the mall shooting had been an act of a deranged teenager.
Robert Heimberger, President of the Bavarian State Crime Office, told the press that the police were still investigating findings suggesting Sonboly had lured his victims to the mall in the first place, by inviting people to a fast food restaurant there.
“(He) said he would treat them to what they wanted, as long as it wasn’t too expensive- that was the invitation.”
He added that this still needed to be verified, but there were many clues suggesting the shooter had set up the invitation and posted it online.
