A multiple accident along the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha expressway has claimed three lives and five others injured in the process.
The incident which occurred at about 8:30 on Monday at the Okhuahae bridge, involved two trucks marked ABS 91 XA belonging to Dangote Group, XB 995 UKP belonging to Guinness company and a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number SAP 135 AA respectively.
Motorists plying the dual carriage route were forced to divert to another lane, causing serious traffic gridlock that lasted for several hours along the road.
The Edo Sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Familoni Oluwasusi, who confirmed the crash yesterday, said the accident happened at the Okhuahae Bridge near, Benin. He did not, however, give reasons for the accident.
He stated that out of the eight male adults involved in the accident, three died while five of them sustained injuries.
The FRSC boss disclosed that it took the combined team of the police and FRSC officials to rescue the victims and the affected vehicles from the scene.
He explained further that the remains of the dead were taken to the hospital morgue of the agency at Jamila junction close to Ramat Park, Ikopba Hill ,Benin, the state capital.
“ The dead victims were taken to our clinic at Jamila junction at Ramat in Benin and the police took possession of the recovered properties of the victims while the road has been cleared for motorists plying the route,” the commission said.
