Africa’s largest mobile phone operator is battling to reduce an unprecedented $5.2 billion penalty imposed on it by the Nigerian regulator NCC for failure to disconnect unregistered SIM cards.
In the wake of this crisis, MTN’s CEO Sifiso Dabengwa, announced his resignation. Earlier today Phuthuna Nhleko agreed to taken charge at the helm of affairs, becoming Executive Chairman for a maximum of six months, switching from the position of Non Executive Chairman.
Nhleko, an Ohio state trained engineer transformed MTN from a small South African company to a 22 country telecommunications giant in nine years before stepping aside for Dabengwa.
Nhleko is highly respected in the telecoms industry and he says he plans to resolve the issue through negotiations with NCC in the next two weeks.
