Mourinho keeps ‘calm’ over Chelsea’s pursuit of Wayne Rooney

2 Min Read

Returning Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has stated that the club is ‘calm’ over the pursuit of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, despite no new developments.

Whilst the 50-year-old has admitted that the Blues made an official bid for Rooney, with Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku already at the club Mourinho believes they’re already well equipped up-front.

“We have made that bid which was public and official and after that nothing else,” the Portuguese boss was quoted in the Telegraph.

“We are calm because we are happy with what we have.

“Fernando I think will be pleased because during his time at Chelsea he was basically the only striker.

“After that there was the arrival of Ba in January. Now the team has three strikers.”

It’s likely that if the west London club do land Rooney then Mourinho would be prepared to let one of the current forwards leave – with the most probable candidate being Ba.

Yet with the Red Devils hosting the Blues in new boss David Moyes’ first home match at Old Trafford on August 26, it’s unlikely the Scot will be willing to sell Rooney before then.

Therefore the man in charge at Stamford Bridge will have to wait until almost the last moment in the transfer window to try and sign the England international, meaning Mourinho will most certainly have to stay calm.

Moyes is obviously reluctant to sell the 27-year-old at all and especially to a Premier League rival, so if Rooney were to become a Chelsea player this summer it would serve as something of a surprise.
